Joining a Teledermatologist appointment using the Jitsi Meet Mobile App

Teledermatologist video consultations are typically run via the Chrome web browser on desktop, laptop, tablet & mobile devices. However, some devices, in particular iOS devices can often experience issues accessing or sharing their camera & audio devices.

In the event that you’re on a mobile device & you can’t connect to the video conference using Chrome, then the next option we recommend is to install the “Jitsi” mobile client. The “Jitsi” mobile client is available for download on the Google Play (for Android devices) and Apple App Store (for iOS devices).

Once you have downloaded the “Jitsi” mobile client you will need to locate it on your device & open it. Once you have the “Jitsi” mobile app open you can follow the screenshots below. These screenshots will guide you through the following steps:

  1. Join a room

  2. Enter password

  3. (optional) Enable/Disable your microphone or camera

  4. (optional) How to access the instant messenger / chat feature

Please be aware that video conference does use up data. If you’re on a mobile plan, then please be aware of what your download limits are. A Teledermatologist video consultation could use up to ~1 GB of data. On average the amount of data transferred is significantly less than 1 GB, but for safety and simplicity we suggest that you should plan to use up to 1 GB of data.

Step 1: Joining a room

Prior to joining the consultation, you will be sent a room URL & a password for that room. You can either copy & paste the room URL, or enter it in manually. Copy and pasting is the preferred method, as it often prevents data entry mistakes.

Once you have entered or pasted in the room URL, you can then press the “CREATE / JOIN” button. If you have successfully entered the room URL, you should be stopped and asked to enter the password.

All of our meeting links should look something like this…

  • Where “roomname” will vary from appointment to appointment.

Tip & Tricks:

The hardest part about entering the room name is typing in “https://meet.teledermatologist.com.au/”, so this approach makes it a bit easier when it comes to joining your Teledermatologist meeting:

  1. On your device, go to https://meet.teledermatologist.com.au/ & bookmark that URL

  2. When a consultation comes, we will provide you with a "Meeting Link" (which includes the room name), for example:

    1. https://meet.teledermatologist.com.au/test or

    2. https://meet.teledermatologist.com.au/newurl or

    3. https://meet.teledermatologist.com.au/telehealth123 etc

  3. Note what comes after the .com.au/

  4. Load up the bookmark we created in step 1 & copy URL.

  5. Then open up the Jitsi Meet application & paste in the URL (https://meet.teledermatologist.com.au/)

  6. Now you just need to manually enter in the test123 or what ever follows the .com.au/

Step 2: Entering the password

Your password will be included in the meeting details that we send before the meeting starts. You may likely have copied the meeting URL from that message. Find the password in that message and then enter it in. Once you have entered the password you can press the “Ok” button.

Congratulations, at this point you should be connected to the room & ready to video-conference.

  • If it’s your first time connecting, then you may be asked to enter in your name & email address. This helps us identify multiple people in a videoconference with many attendees. Simply entering in a first name is sufficient.

  • If you encounter any issues before this step, then please be sure that you’re in contact with us & we will help you resolve the issues.

(optional) Step 3: Enable / Disable your microphone & camera

Often you won’t need to enable or disable your microphone & camera. But sometimes you may join a room & by default your camera & microphone will be disabled. In order to enable your microphone touch the screen & you will see the “controls” overlay appear. At the bottom over the overlay are your microphone and camera

(optional) Step 4: How to access the instant messenger

The instant messenger feature is rarely used in video consultations, but being aware of it & how to access it might help in certain situations. For example, our coordinator or specialist may send you a link to something pertinent to your appointment. Alternatively you can converse using this feature if you’re experience a variety of technical issues.

Accessing the instant messenger is straight forward, simply touch on the screen to reveal the “controls” overlay. Once the overlay appears you should be able to see a chat icon down in the bottom left hand corner. The chat icon looks like a rectangular speech bubble.

  • If you press that icon the messenger interface will open up. Once you’re in the messenger interface, the experience should be fairly familiar to other chatting experiences.

  • To exit the messenger interface, please click the back icon at the top left side of the screen. Note: do not press a home button or back button on your phone to exit the messenger interface. As this will likely exit the App & potentially prematurely end the call.
